At K&W Cafeterias, we’ve been serving fresh, made-from-scratch foods for over 70 years! What began in Winston-Salem, NC as a small restaurant/cafeteria combination has grown into over 30 cafeterias throughout NC, SC, VA, and WV. Our founder, Grady T. Allred, Sr., built this business on one basic philosophy, “... good food at a reasonable price is never out of style.”

The K & W Cafeteria Story

  The K & W Cafeteria Story

The history of K&W Cafeterias can be traced back to the mid-1930s and a small coffee shop located on Cherry Street in downtown Winston-Salem, NC. It was at the Carolinian Coffee Shop that Grady T. Allred, Sr., went to work on Thanksgiving Day, 1935, as a partner overseeing daily operations. Soon after, the Carolinian was renamed K&W Restaurant after original investors Thomas, Kenneth and William Wilson and their brother-in-law, T.K. Knight. In 1939, Allred began to acquire additional shares in the business. Within two years he became the restaurant’s sole owner. He added cafeteria-style service to the restaurant in 1951.

Today, K&W Cafeterias, Inc. is still owned by Allred’s family.

A stroll down our serving line will reveal a colorful selection of more than 18 refreshing salads, 15 steaming hot entrees and vegetables, and our famous made-from-scratch breads and desserts*.

This amazing selection has something to satisfy every taste, diet and age group, including a special menu for children 12 and younger and menu items prepared in accordance with recommendations to reduce dietary fat, cholesterol and sodium. These “healthy options” are denoted on our serving line by a heart icon.
