Discover The Roots of The Blue Ridge Restaurant

The building that houses the Blue Ridge Restaurant was built in 1897. It was expanded in 1904 to open the Floyd County Bank. The Floyd County Bank closed in 1915 and was reopened as Citizens Bank in 1920. Citizens Bank closed in 1923.

The Citizens Bank building was sold and opened as a restaurant in the late 1920’s. The restaurant at the time was known as the Blue Ridge Cafe. The bank safe was transformed into a walk-in cooler and a bar was installed with beer and wine. The cafe offered breakfast, plate lunches, burgers and sandwiches. Pinto beans, mashed potatoes, cole slaw and corn bread were daily favorites, and continue to be to this day as the Floyd County Plate. The Blue Ridge Restaurant no longer sells alcohol.

Lee and Gail Hooks bought the Blue Ridge Restaurant in 1987. The Hooks moved to Floyd from Asheville, NC. They loved the tranquility, mix of people and beautiful views Floyd had to offer. The Hooks lived above the restaurant and worked day and night. Lee and Gail had different days off and alternated opening and closing the restaurant for the first 5 years of ownership. It was a difficult time for the Hooks, but worth every minute.

The Hooks have been fortunate enough that their life has slowed down and they now have passed the duties to the manager, Jessica Lusk. The 22 years the Hooks have spent at the Blue Ridge Restaurant have been exciting and sometimes difficult, but never dull.

Relax on a pleasant drive to Floyd, enjoy the shops, beauty and peace of Floyd County.
